I am a passionate artist privileged to work as a stage designer here in the Pee Dee region. I love the sky in South Carolina. I find great inspiration observing how the light moves through the clouds and refracts when it hits the tops of the trees and the ground beneath; the same sky that canopied my history when it took root. My grandparents and family ancestry were born in Lane, SC, in Clarendon County, dating back to when my forefathers were brought to these shores and became part of the American story. I often visit the 300-acre farm that my great-great-grandfather, Dr. Lawrence Miller, purchased, which was one of my main inspirations to leave my birthplace in Brooklyn, NY, and return to SC in 2003. In 2013, I shifted my focus from house framing and woodworking to stage production, volunteering at the FMU Performing Arts Center until I began my studies at Francis Marion University for Theatre Arts in 2015. There, I studied Lighting Design with David Granath and honed my craft. I’ve often engaged in long discussions with friends and colleagues about the growth of the Southeast and my passion for community theatre. I believe in the great potential of this region and have been diligently working toward its development for the past decade. I have designed lighting and sets for Broadway plays and musicals in several cities here in the Pee Dee, as well as worship centers. It is my continuing aspiration to produce for live stage and the support needed for theatrical education. I am grateful to be part of this community, contributing to the great tradition of storytelling from the stage and the lights that shine above it. Lahim Ballard
